Getting Millennial Employees to Make and Answer More Calls

Do millennials love their phones?

Yes. Bank of America found that 39% of millennials interact more with their smartphones than they do with their co-workers, family members or even their loved ones. That’s backed up by anecdotal evidence – you see people on their smartphones everywhere you look. Their phones have become integral to their daily lives.

47% of people in the 18-29 age range say they couldn’t live without their smartphones.

Do millennials hate their phones?

Yes, again. A report in the Wall Street Journal offered up the example of a millennial who says he hates unplanned calls so much that he “usually unplugs his desk phone and stashes it in a cabinet.”

Which is it? Do they love their phones or hate them?

The answer, of course, is both. They love the freedom their phones give them to stay connected everywhere, but they hate the uncomfortable uncertainty that comes with making or answering calls.

Now small business owners have a tool that helps them take advantage of both trends to operate more profitably. The Spoke app on a smartphone is the key to getting millennials employees to make and answer more calls.

Let them use the phones they love

Legacy business phones systems were designed under a different kind of business structure, where people spent the work day at their desks. That world is long gone.

The IDC found that nearly 3 out of 4 workers will be mobile by 2020. To maximize the effectiveness of the mobile workforce world, it makes more sense to allow employees to use their own personal phone for work. They get a phone they are more comfortable with using and you get to eliminate the cost of a fixed line phone system. With a Mobile Device Management platform, you can convert all of your employee phones into a single secure network.

Spoke takes care of the details so you can get up and running in less than 3 minutes:

  • A dedicated dial-in (DDI) number, with a choice of local numbers all over the world
  • Masking for outgoing calls, to protect employee privacy and your company data
  • High quality voice service over your cellular network so you don’t use up your limited data
  • Business essentials like multiple lines, hunt groups, easy transfers, and instant contact updates
  • Advanced features like a learning AI attendant, presence-based routing, and internal call data

End their fear of phone call uncertainty

Employees hate being interrupted and they don’t want to feel like they are interrupting others. Spoke solves that by allowing you to add context to the call, specifying what the call is about and how urgent it is. That combines the low pressure of text messaging with the problem-resolution power of a phone call.

In addition, there’s no doubt millenials hate phone tag. In 2015, when JPMorgan offered employees the option to eliminate voicemail, 65% of their employees said “Cut the cord.” That saved the company around $3.2 million. Coca-Cola and Citigroup soon followed suit and many smaller businesses are revisiting the cost of their communication infrastructure.

Spoke reduces the need for voicemail with advanced presence detection that lets you know when team members are on another call, have their phone on silent or are available to talk. Phone tag ends here.

Does your business phone system help you talk to people?

It seems obvious, but some business phone systems don't actually help people talk. They are too hard to set up and too hard to use. At Spoke, we believe that talking is the best way to solve problems fast, so we focus on getting more calls made and answered.

We've built a simple, intuitive interface that employees and customers will love to use. Based off how small and medium sized companies actually use their phones, we've learned that less is more when it comes to business phone systems. We've designed Spoke around the core phone system features small companies need and want. It's built to be deployed across your mobile phone infrastructure and administered from a simple app. Simple to install and easy to use.

Our smart directory keeps track of all your business calls and lets you know who needs a call back by someone on the team. You can choose multiple business phone lines or port over numbers you're already using.
